STUDENTS' BULLETIN BOARDS SAFETY AND SECURITY STUDENTS' ORIENTATION & SLEEP- IN ALUMNI NEWS

Dr. H. M. Carpenter, while on sabbatical leave was enrolled as a post-doctoral fellow in the University of North Carolina, School of Public Health Chapel Hill, during the fall term of the 1972/73 session. Early in 1973 she was associated with the University of Edinburgh, Department of Nursing as a visit¬ ing professor. There she delivered the first 'Elsie Stephenson Memorial Lecture' entitled "Nursing Education - The Canadian Scene" and served as a resource person on the following day's seminar on issues in nursing education. During April and May she visited selected government departments and health services in Great Britain, Finland, Sweden and Denmark, to learn about developments in long-term illness care, nursing research and nursing education.

"HOW LUCKY CAN ONE GET?"

Prof. M. Jean Wilson's contribution to "Nursing Papers", McGill University, appeared in Volume 5, No.l, June 73 issue under the title "An Overview of the New Basic Curriculum.

CHANGES OF ADDRESS & OTHER PERSONAL DATA:

Prof. M. K. Harrison advises that she uses her maiden name professionally. The entry in the Staff Directory should read: Harrison, Miss M.K., Home Telephone: 964-7936.

Mrs. J. M. Peterson's address should be changed to read: 1248 Avenue Road, Toronto M5N 2G7, Home Telephone: 484-3446.

All similar changes must be made known to the Dean's Secretary,

Mrs. Maria Williams, as soon as they become effective. A note to this effect may be left in Mrs. Williams's mail slot in the Faculty Office.

STAFF MEETING. Sept. A - 6:

This is a last-minute reminder that basic reading for discussion at the forthcoming Staff Meeting is available as follows;

1. "Educational Programs for the Nurse Assuming an Expanded Role in Primary Care" - a draft report is available for reading in the faculty lounge.

2. "University Policy Statement on Supplemental Income and Related Activities" - copies are available from Miss Freudenthal, Room 103.

3. "The New U of T Code of Behaviour" - copies are available from Miss Freudenthal in Room 103.

CALENDAR. 1974-1975 :

The Committee on Conditions for Academic Standing will meet on 18th September. Suggestions for Calendar changes in this area should be brought to Dr. N. Parker before that date.

LIBRARY;

Robarts Library; Guided tours are available five days a week at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m,, and 3 p.m. : also on Saturdays at 3 p.m. These times are subject to adjustment after the beginning of the term.

Medical Sciences Library: The move of the Faculty of Nursing Library material has been postponed to the last week of September, or early in October. When completed, orientation tours will be conducted and times will be posted on the Staff Bulletin Board in the lounge.

SAFETY AND SECURITY:

We have been reminded that the University's safety record with the Workmen's Compensation Board has again deteriorated during the summer months. At the start of the new session some timely reminders may be helpful:

1* In case of accident, a first-aid kit is kept by the caretaker and one is kept in the Faculty Office. Workmen's Compensation Forms must be obtained from the Faculty Secretary and taken to either the W.C.B. or private physician. All accidents must be reported by the Faculty Secretary immediately when they occur to the Department of Environmental Hazard Control and Security at Tel: 2344*

(Complications and treatment arising subsequent to an accident may not be covered by benefits if the accident was not reported at the time of occurrance. )

3. Keys; Keys must not be taken from the board in Miss Freudenthal' s office. Any key must be returned to Miss Freudenthal personally or placed in a sealed envelope in her mail slot. Be sure to write the name of the person returning the key on the envelope. Records must be kept up to date and keys accounted for.

STUDENT S ' BULLET IN BOARDS ;

Yellow boards are provided for use by the Faculty teaching and adminis¬ trative staff. Yellow Class Boards are for the use by members of the Faculty only. Student-to-Student notices should be removed from these boards in all cases.

Separate notice boards are provided for student use at their discretionl

At the beginning of a session, commercial agents and students frequently post advertising material on walls, doors, and banisters. These should be removed when noticed and all cooperation will be appreciated,

DEAN'S COFFEE PARTY:

The Dean has invited all students and all members of the Faculty staff to a welcoming coffee party on Monday, 10th September, from 900 to 11:30 a.m. in Cody Hall. Name tags have been provided for all members of the teaching staff. It was felt that this identification would be helpful, particularly for new students.

STUDENTS' ORIENTATION AND SLEEP-IN :

Definitely for the last year, a sleep-in in the students' lounge during the night of Thursday, 9th September, constitutes part of the student orien¬ tation exercises. This will be preceded by a supper in the students ' lounge .

Faculty members are very kindly asked to facilitate this event by removing their supplies from the frigidaire on the afternoon of 9th September, in order that supper preparations may be stored. On behalf of the students, a very hearty thank you for this consideration.!

ALUMNI NEWS:

Dr. A. P. Ruderman, Department of Health Administration, School of Hygiene, supplied a page from the Revista Paulista de Hospitais containing a notice that Miss Haydee Guanais Dourado was named "Nurse Of The Year" by the Brazilian Nursing Association. Miss Dourado completed the course in nursing supervision and pedagogy in the School of Nursing, University of Toronto, in 1941/42.

"HOW LUCKY CAN ONE GET?":

Mr. Henry Robson, caretaker in the Faculty of Nursing, was the lucky "Pin Pal" who won a substantial prize on the T.V. Program "Bowling for Dollars". To share his good luck, Mr. Robson suggested that all Universit- colleagues in the Faculty be made aware of the program on Channel 2,
